Q. Can you tell us a little bit about you, who you are and what your interests are?

A. My name is Alison Doherty and I live in Carndonagh Co-Donegal. I have two wonderful boys Ryan 10 and Dillion 7.  My interests include Irish Dancing, Walking and Zumba.

Q.  What do you do at Dyspraxia/DCD Ireland?

A. I am founder of the Donegal Dyspraxia support group since March 2018. I often attended meetings in Dublin with Dyspraxia Ireland and have met lots of new people there. I run talks to raise awareness of Dyspraxia DCD in our Education system and Healthcare system, and tell my story. I speak to lots of parents and teachers and offer my support to them.  I ran activities in co with Donegal Sports Partnership such as fundamentals, a cycling programme and Brixx Lego Club. These were a great hit with the parents and children.

Q. Why did you decide to volunteer for the organisation?

A. I decided to become a volunteer as the awareness of Dyspraxia in Donegal was not there. I believe it’s the pathway my son Ryan led me to after his diagnosis. I wanted to learn more and I think it’s very important to take a great interest in Dyspraxia and important to become more educated in it.

Q. What is the best part of being a volunteer?

A. The Best part of being a volunteer is talking to other parents, engaging with them and having a greater understanding and listening to their stories. Also hearing about the great strengths and interests our children have, what they have achieved and will achieve in the future.

Q. Would you recommend volunteering to others?

A. Yes I think it’s good to become a volunteer to get advice and ideas from other volunteers, as they show a great understanding to each of us. It leaves me feeling very inspired and thankful to connect with such a great group of parents.
