Research on Dyspraxia in Adolescents by Catherine Milford

You can be an important part of a new research study which will explore how having dyspraxia may impact on the day to day lives of teenagers. This will be done by looking at how teenagers with dyspraxia spend their time and if having dyspraxia affects your ability to participate in activities that you consider important.

This research can help us get a deeper understanding of the specific life experience of an adolescent with Dyspraxia, which will contribute to the general knowledge available about Dyspraxia in adolescents, and allow services to be planned that will better meet the needs of adolescents with Dyspraxia. The research will involve 2 interviews with each adolescent and 2 interviews with one of his/her parents.

We will talk about what activities you participate in, how you participate in those activities and what factors help or hinder you to participate. The interviews will take place at your home and all your personal details will be kept completely anonymous. Your participation will be completely voluntary and you will be able to withdraw yourself from the study at any time if you wish.

If you would like more details about the research or are interested in being a part of this important research, please contact the Dyspraxia Association of Ireland on (01) 8747085

Research : Investigating levels of self esteem of Irish children with Dyspraxia/DCD

Dear parents and members of the Dyspraxia Association of Ireland,

I am studying occupational therapy at the National University of Ireland, Galway (NUIG). As part of my final year, I am required to undertake a research project. The topic I have chosen is ‘Investigating levels of self-esteem of Irish children with Dyspraxia/DCD'. I aim to identify common factors contributing to either high or low self-esteem for children and adolescents with DCD/Dyspraxia.

I would like to invite you and your child/teenager to participate in my study. As part of the study you will be required to complete a postal questionnaire which should take no more than 10-15 minutes to complete. Your child will be asked to complete a standardised questionnaire of yes/no format which I will use to gather information on their self-esteem. This should take approximately 15-20 minutes for your child to complete. All information provided by you and your child will be treated with strictest confidentiality at all times. Information gathered during the study will be stored securely and will protect your identity.

Results will be presented in a written research paper/dissertation and at an undergraduate research conference to be held in NUI Galway in April. Results may also be used for future research purposes.
If you and your child/teenager are interested in participating in this study, please make yourself known to a member of the committee.

Information packs and consent forms will be distributed in the coming weeks to those of you who are interested in participating. Participation is voluntary and you are free to withdraw at any time should you choose to participate. Your legal rights will not be affected in any way.
